Fifa World Cup 2026

Heartbroken Kane reflects on England’s semifinal defeat, praises Messi’s brilliance

England captain Harry Kane expressed deep disappointment after his side’s 2-1 defeat to defending champions Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final, describing the loss as “extremely painful” after coming so close to reaching England’s first World Cup final since 1966.

England took the lead through Anthony Gordon before Argentina mounted a late comeback, with Lionel Messi setting up Enzo Fernandez’s equalizer before delivering the cross that Lautaro Martinez headed home in stoppage time to send the reigning champions into the final against Spain.

“We are very sad, for the players, the coaching staff and the fans,” Kane told the BBC. “We played well for most of the match, but after taking the lead, it felt like we were trying to protect the result, and that’s not enough at this level.”

The Bayern Munich striker, who finished the tournament with six goals, said England struggled to cope with Argentina’s sustained attacking pressure after conceding.

“After the goal, whether because of their attacking surge or because we couldn’t match them player for player, we faced wave after wave of attacks,” he said. “The players gave everything and made crucial defensive interventions, but in the end it wasn’t enough.”

Kane stressed that England’s intention was never to sit back after Gordon’s opener.
“The instructions were clear—to keep attacking and look for a second goal. After they scored twice, we tried to fight our way back into the game, but we couldn’t regain momentum,” he said.

Praising Messi, Kane described the Argentine captain as “one of the greatest players in history, if not the greatest.”

“We managed to contain him for long periods, but players like him are always dangerous. Once Argentina began controlling the ball in the final third, he returned to his best and ultimately created the two decisive goals,” Kane said.

The England skipper also defended head coach Thomas Tuchel against criticism following the defeat.

“There will always be talk after a loss about blaming the coach or his decisions, but this is not the time for that,” Kane said. “We win and lose together. If the substitutions had worked, everyone would have called him a genius. We’re close, we’re knocking on the door, but we still need to find that missing piece of the puzzle.”
