King Charles III, Queen Camilla honor 9/11 victims, reaffirms UK-US solidarity in emotional New York visit

From Ground Zero to Harlem, King Charles blends remembrance with community outreach in NYC

During the official visit to New York City, King Charles III and Queen Camilla paid a solemn tribute to the victims of the September 11 attacks, reaffirming solidarity with the American people.

At the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in Lower Manhattan, the royal couple laid a bouquet of white lilacs, daffodils, and peonies at the site where the World Trade Center’s twin towers once stood. The towers were destroyed in coordinated attacks carried out by militants from al-Qaeda, claiming the lives of 2,753 people.

A handwritten message accompanying the floral tribute read: “We honour the memory of all those who so tragically lost their lives on 11th September 2001, and stand in enduring solidarity with the American people in the face of such profound loss.” The note was signed “Charles R, Camilla R.”

In a deeply moving gesture, the King and Queen met with families of victims and first responders, offering words of comfort and compassion. Anthoula Katsimatides, who lost her brother in the tragedy, described the encounter as heartfelt, noting the warmth and empathy shown by both royals.

The visit also included brief discussions with Zohran Mamdani and other local dignitaries, underscoring the significance of international unity in remembrance.

Later, King Charles visited the Harlem Grown initiative in Harlem, which supports youth affected by food insecurity. Engaging with primary school children, the King planted lavender and mustard seeds and participated in farm activities, highlighting the importance of sustainability and community development.

The visit reflected a balance between solemn remembrance and forward-looking engagement, reinforcing shared values of resilience, compassion, and global solidarity.
