Lebanon on edge as US-Israel strikes on Iran raise fears of regional spillover

Lebanon faces rising tensions as US-backed Israeli strikes target Iran, raising fears that the conflict could spill over into Beirut.

While the Lebanese government has repeatedly stated it will not intervene in foreign disputes, Hezbollah has warned that any attack on Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would be considered a “red line” and could prompt retaliation.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam urged Hezbollah to avoid dragging Lebanon into “another adventure,” emphasizing the country’s desire to stay out of regional conflicts, dw.com reports.

Meanwhile, Israel has warned it would respond forcefully, including targeting civilian infrastructure, if Hezbollah becomes involved.

Analysts note that Hezbollah is navigating a delicate domestic situation. While its military wing opposes disarmament, the political wing retains significant influence in parliament and social services.

Experts suggest that Hezbollah’s response to escalation could be symbolic and carefully measured to avoid provoking massive Israeli retaliation.

Lebanon’s population remains deeply concerned. Years of economic crises, the Beirut port explosion in 2020, and previous conflicts with Israel have left residents anxious about the potential for renewed war. Many fear that the country could once again be caught in the crossfire of a larger regional conflict.

International efforts to stabilize Lebanon, including reconstruction investments, continue to hinge on Hezbollah’s willingness to disarm, adding to the uncertainty facing the nation.
