PAFN closes butchery over rotten meat and deceptive sales practices

The Public Authority for Food and Nutrition has ordered the immediate closure of a butcher shop after inspectors uncovered the sale of frozen meat falsely marketed as fresh, alongside the presence of spoiled meat unfit for human consumption.

The action followed a joint inspection campaign carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Interior, during which authorities raided the premises and issued multiple violation reports citing serious breaches of food safety regulations, reports Al-Rai daily.

Inspectors documented the sale of food products that failed to meet approved specifications and regulatory standards.

Among the seized items were 91 sheep heads weighing 86 kilograms, found to be of unknown origin and non-compliant with health requirements, as well as 7 kilograms of sheep feet, similarly lacking proper sourcing and conformity.

The inspection also revealed deliberate misrepresentation of imported products, with 35 kilograms of frozen sheep fat of Chinese origin thawed and offered for sale as fresh.

In addition, authorities confiscated 42 kilograms of frozen Chinese sheep liver, 1.5 kilograms of frozen Chinese sheep hearts, and quantities of frozen cut-up sheep meat, all handled in violation of food safety rules.

A separate and more severe violation was recorded for trading in food unfit for human consumption, after inspectors found 13 trays of sheep offal, weighing 5 kilograms, that were spoiled, of unknown origin, and had undergone clear changes in their natural characteristics, including abnormal color and odor.

The authority confirmed that the closure was enforced in line with public health regulations and stressed that strict legal measures will continue to be applied against establishments that endanger consumer safety or engage in deceptive food practices.
