MOH confirms continued global recognition for blood and cell therapy facilities

The Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday the renewal of international accreditation for the Central Blood Bank and the Sheikha Salwa Al-Sabah Stem Cell and Umbilical Cord Center.

The recognition, granted by the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Cell Therapy (AABB), extends a process that began in 1989 and is renewed every two years.

The accreditation followed a rigorous global evaluation based on four key pillars, including donation standards, blood testing and safety, reference laboratories for rare blood types, and blood transfusion and genetic laboratory procedures.

The evaluation confirmed the facilities’ advanced readiness, procedural accuracy, and adherence to international quality standards, reports Al-Rai daily.

Dr. Reem Al-Radwan, Director of the Blood Transfusion Services Department, emphasized that more than 35 years of continuous international recognition reflect the department’s commitment to institutional excellence and ongoing quality improvement. She highlighted the efforts of technical, medical, and administrative teams in meeting the latest evaluation standards.

Dr. Hanan Al-Awadhi, the department’s Medical Director, noted that the renewed accreditation demonstrates the depth of technical expertise in areas such as donation, testing, transportation, and laboratory work.

She added that the recognition supports plans to expand cell therapy programs and advance genetic laboratory technologies, positioning Kuwait as a regional leader in these services.

The Ministry stated that this milestone underscores the health system’s ability to maintain high-quality standards, enhance patient and donor safety, and build international confidence in Kuwait’s medical institutions and personnel.
