Negotiations underway for electricity storage battery project with capacity up to 1,500 megawatts

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Dr. Adel Al-Zamil, announced that the ministry is still in negotiations regarding the electricity storage battery project, with the goal of further clarifying its technical and operational aspects.

Speaking at the opening of the Gulf Electricity Conference 2025, Al-Zamil revealed that the project’s expected storage capacity will range between 1,000 and 1,500 megawatts, and it is planned to be implemented in two phases by 2027, in line with Kuwait’s future energy needs, reports Al-Rai daily.

Addressing the study of electricity and water consumption tariffs, Al-Zamil said the matter “is still under review,” emphasizing that the ministry is keen to protect low-income consumers from any negative impact while at the same time preserving the nation’s resources and reducing wasteful consumption patterns in certain sectors.

Regarding Gulf electricity interconnection, he noted that Kuwait currently has an energy purchase agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority, which helps reduce energy production costs.

He added that another agreement is expected in the upcoming spring and summer seasons to further enhance energy supply cooperation.

Al-Zamil also revealed that the ministry is nearing completion of a new interconnection line with the Gulf power grid to increase import capacity, with the project expected to be finalized within this month.

On the law allowing energy purchases from external producers, Al-Zamil said it is expected to be issued soon. He explained that the law is tied to a series of regulations and economic decisions related to energy procurement, consumption tariffs, and private sector participation in production, adding that Kuwait can expect to see significant and innovative achievements in the energy sector in the coming months.
