US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he had agreed to lower tariffs on Chinese goods related to the fentanyl dispute to 10%, following his first face-to-face meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in six years in Busan, South Korea.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump described the discussions with Xi as “resolved” and confirmed that the two leaders also reached an understanding on rare earth minerals.
The US President noted that he and his Chinese counterpart agreed to cooperate on the war in Ukraine, emphasizing that the Taiwan issue was not discussed during the meeting, according to news reports.
He described Ukraine as “of great interest” and said both countries would work together to seek progress.
The US president has confirmed plans to visit China in April, with Xi Jinping expected to visit the United States later.
Trump also mentioned that Gaza had returned to a ceasefire and commented that it would be “appropriate” for the US to conduct a nuclear weapons test while other countries are doing so, with test sites to be determined later.
The meeting in South Korea lasted approximately one hour and 40 minutes, marking a significant step in easing tensions in US-China trade relations.
This announcement comes after ongoing trade negotiations aimed at resolving disputes and strengthening cooperation between the world’s two largest economies.
