KISR deploys AI devices to monitor migratory birds in Kuwait’s nature reserves

The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) has installed six advanced monitoring devices in the Al-Liyah and Kabad nature reserves to track migratory bird species, their behaviors, and breeding patterns. The system uses artificial intelligence to identify each bird by its voice, providing precise data for research and conservation efforts.
Researcher Sarah Al-Dosari explained that the studies are examining the impact of urban environments on bird behavior and the role of protected areas in enhancing conditions for bird communities. The research is expected to last approximately two years, covering at least two migration seasons to Kuwait.
Autumn Migration Monitoring and Awareness Campaign
Al-Dosari highlighted that since the start of the autumn migration season, the institute has implemented measures including bird monitoring, installation of AI devices, and an awareness campaign to protect birds and promote safe natural habitats.
The campaign, conducted in coordination with the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, encourages citizens to participate using an electronic application for migratory birds, allowing users to document bird sightings with photos or videos, particularly of rare species.
Resident and Migratory Birds
Al-Dosari noted that Kuwait is home to around 46 resident bird species, including coastal birds such as pelicans, gulls, and flamingos, and desert birds like ospreys, larks, and some eagles.
She identified key breeding and stopover areas for migratory birds:
- Coastal birds: Failaka, Warba, Bubiyan, Kubbar islands, and sea beaches
- Desert birds: Border areas, Salmi, Abraq Houbara
- Nature reserves: Sabah Al-Ahmad Reserve, Jahra Reserve, and Kabad
- Farms and other areas: Abdali, Wafra, and Al-Zour
These initiatives aim to strengthen conservation efforts and enhance the understanding of Kuwait’s avian biodiversity, supporting both ecological research and community engagement.
