China has inaugurated the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, a monumental structure rising 625 meters above the Beipan River in the rugged terrain of Guizhou Province.
According to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, the bridge is about nine times longer than San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge, underscoring China’s engineering ambition and growing infrastructure prowess.
With a main span of 1,420 meters, the project has earned the title of the world’s longest steel truss suspension bridge in mountainous terrain, according to Chinese provincial authorities.
The bridge stretches an impressive 2,890 meters across the Huajiang Grand Canyon, often referred to as the “earth split,” and is now open to traffic.
The opening marks another milestone in China’s massive infrastructure drive, particularly in Guizhou, one of the country’s least developed yet most geographically challenging provinces.
Over the past decades, Guizhou has transformed into a hub of bridge construction, with more than 30,000 bridges built to connect its mountainous landscape.
The province now boasts nearly half of the world’s 100 longest bridges, including three record-setters.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge not only symbolizes China’s engineering excellence but also plays a critical role in enhancing regional connectivity, boosting economic activity, and reducing travel times in a province once constrained by its steep valleys and isolated communities.
