America basks in ‘Midnight’ tariff deadline: Trump

The United States began implementing a sweeping round of new tariffs on imports from dozens of countries today, as President Donald Trump celebrated the move on his Truth Social platform.

He declared, “It’s midnight!! Billions of dollars in tariffs are now flowing into the United States of America.”

The new tariff regime targets a wide range of global economies. Goods from the European Union, Japan, and South Korea now face a 15% tariff, despite recent efforts by these allies to negotiate deals and avoid steeper hikes, according to reports.

India, however, has been hit with 25% tariffs, which are set to double within three weeks, marking a sharp escalation in U.S. trade policy. Meanwhile, nations such as Syria, Myanmar, and Laos face some of the highest penalties, with tariffs soaring to 41% on select goods.

The measures are part of Trump’s ongoing strategy to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce trade deficits, although critics warn of potential retaliation and disruptions to global supply chains.
