Kuwaiti environmentalist Shabib Al-Ajmi creates first deer reserve in Umm Qadeer

'My goal is to promote ecotourism and instill a culture of wildlife conservation among the next generation'

After three years of dedication and passion, Kuwaiti environmental activist Shabib Mubarak Al-Ajmi has successfully established Kuwait’s first deer reserve, known as Al-Wadihi Reserve, in the Umm Qadeer region southwest of the country.

The reserve is home to 30 Arabian Oryx and 10 Arabian gazelles, all raised by Al-Ajmi out of love for wildlife, not profit. “They feed on natural grasses and fodder. I care for them daily — not to sell them, but because I want to protect and promote wildlife,” he told Al-Rai.

The reserve also features over 7,000 wild trees, including Arfaj, Ramth, Shanan, Sha’ran, and 500 Sidr trees, creating a green oasis for animals and visitors alike. In addition to deer, Al-Wadihi is inhabited by ostriches, wild ducks, and even the endangered sand cat, contributing to Kuwait’s biodiversity.

Though the estimated value of an Arabian oryx is 1,000 dinars and a gazelle 600 dinars, Al-Ajmi says his initiative goes beyond monetary value. “My goal is to promote ecotourism and instill a culture of wildlife conservation among the next generation.”

Open to the public free of charge, Al-Wadihi Reserve has become a tranquil retreat where people can connect with nature. “I visit it almost every day. This place is a part of my life—away from the noise and pollution,” Al-Ajmi said, inviting all to witness Kuwait’s natural beauty up close.
