Portugal crowned UEFA Nations League Champions for second time

Ronaldo equalizer forces Portugal-Spain tie into extra time and penalty shootout

Portugal have etched their name in football history by becoming the first team to win the UEFA Nations League twice, overcoming Spain 5-3 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw following extra time in Munich to claim the 2024/25 title.

Cristiano Ronaldo, visibly emotional, was in tears as his team secured their second Nations League triumph. The veteran captain had earlier scored his 138th international goal, which proved vital in forcing the match into a shootout. Spain’s Álvaro Morata missed a crucial penalty, paving the way for Rúben Neves to score the winning kick and ignite jubilant celebrations from the Portuguese side and their fans.

Spain had entered the final full of confidence, riding the momentum of an exhilarating 5-4 semifinal win over France that extended their unbeaten run since March 2023.
They looked poised to add another trophy to their cabinet after last year’s European Championship victory when Martin Zubimendi opened the scoring in the 21st minute with his second goal for the national team.

However, Portugal responded swiftly, with full-back Nuno Mendes calmly finishing off a move initiated by Ronaldo to bring the score level.

Before halftime, a brilliant pass from Spain’s midfielder Pedri found Mikel Oyarzabal, who slotted home to restore Spain’s lead. Oyarzabal, already celebrated for his winning goal against England in the previous European Championship final, seemed to be Spain’s hero once again.

But Portugal refused to back down. Ronaldo struck again to equalize, sending the contest into extra time and eventually to penalties, although he had already left the pitch by the 88th minute.

Tragically, the final was overshadowed by the death of a football fan who fell from the stands during the first period of extra time.

According to UEFA, the supporter fell from the central tier into the media area below, prompting an immediate response from emergency services. Despite their efforts, the fan sadly succumbed to their injuries. The exact circumstances of the fall remain unclear.

In the aftermath of the match, both teams expressed their condolences. Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente offered his sympathies, saying, “My condolences to the family.” Portugal’s coach Roberto Martinez described the incident as “extremely sad news.”

While the night ended with a historic win for Portugal, it was also marked by somber reflection, as the football world mourned a tragic loss amid the celebration.
