Gamal Abdel Nasser Road Tunnel opens to traffic this Sunday

The Public Authority for Roads and Transportation emphasized its commitment to completing the works according to specifications and contract documents.

The Public Authority for Roads and Transportation has announced the completion of the final asphalt layer, Type III, as part of the maintenance work on the Gamal Abdel Nasser Road Tunnel, which runs from the capital to Jahra. The project contractor was required to address certain observations during this phase, according to Al Jarida newspaper.

The authority also announced through its account on the X platform that the indicated road was opened on October 6, with the final layer of “Type III” asphalt to be implemented. The road will open towards Kuwait City on the morning of Sunday, October 13.

It stated, “The necessary tests will be carried out on the asphalt, including the (IRI) examination, to assess the asphalt’s flow before the road opens for traffic.”

According to the post, the authority (the contractor) was required to repair the Gamal Abdel Nasser Street tunnel due to existing issues, with repair work beginning on September 5, 2024.

The authority emphasized its commitment to completing the works according to specifications and contract documents, leading to the contractor being required to address the tunnel repairs.

The necessary actions involve removing the existing asphalt and insulation layers, constructing expansion joints, repairing concrete slabs, performing specialized injection work to prevent water leakage, ensuring insulation to stop water from seeping into the tunnel, and applying both Type II and Type III asphalt.
