Kuwaiti banks deposits surge by 6.37 bln dinars, reach 63.61 billion

  • Annual growth of 11.14 percent highlights expanding banking liquidity, with deposits rising 29.8 percent over five years.

Kuwaiti banks recorded a strong expansion in their deposit base over the 12 months to September 2026, with total deposits rising by 6.37 billion dinars to 63.61 billion dinars, compared with 57.23 billion dinars in September 2025, marking annual growth of 11.14 percent, according to Central Bank of Kuwait data.

The increase underscores the continued expansion of funds held within the domestic banking system and strengthens the role of deposits as a key source of liquidity and financing for local banks.

The annual increase of 6.37 billion dinars translates into average monthly growth of approximately 531.5 million dinars in deposit balances over the comparison period. However, this represents the net expansion of deposits and does not necessarily indicate equivalent new cash inflows each month, as balances are also affected by withdrawals, reinvestments and other movements.

The longer-term trend also points to sustained growth in the banking sector’s funding base. Total deposits increased from 48.99 billion dinars in September 2021 to 63.61 billion dinars by September 2026, representing a cumulative increase of 14.62 billion dinars, or approximately 29.8 percent, over five years.

Deposits remain a fundamental source of funding for banks, supporting their lending, investment and day-to-day operations. A larger deposit base provides banks with greater funding capacity to meet customer financing requirements, subject to liquidity, capital adequacy and risk-management considerations.

The continued expansion also reflects the development of banking services and a wider range of savings products, including savings accounts, demand deposits and fixed-term deposits. These options allow individuals and businesses to manage their funds according to their liquidity requirements, preferred returns and investment horizons.

Deposit returns remain an important consideration in savings decisions, with customers weighing interest rates, deposit maturities, access to funds and alternative investment opportunities.

In this regard, the Central Bank of Kuwait’s discount rate remains at 3.5 percent, serving as an important monetary policy benchmark. However, the discount rate should not be confused with the actual interest rates offered by banks on customer deposits, which may vary according to the type and duration of the deposit.

The real return on savings also depends on inflation, as the purchasing power of deposited funds is influenced by the difference between nominal returns and the rate of price increases. Currency stability is another consideration in assessing the value of savings.

Kuwait’s monetary framework is supported by the dinar’s exchange-rate policy. Since May 20, 2007, the Central Bank of Kuwait has maintained the dinar against a weighted and undisclosed basket of currencies of countries with significant trade and financial relations with Kuwait, rather than linking it to a single currency.

The combination of the banking sector’s expanding deposit base, available savings products and the country’s monetary framework continues to underpin the domestic banking system’s funding environment.
