Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel dies at 30 after on-field collision
Spanish football club CD Tenerife is mourning the tragic death of striker Jesus de Miguel, 30, who died on Tuesday after suffering serious injuries during a second-division match against FC Andorra. The forward sustained head and chest injuries following a heavy collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono late in Monday’s match.
The incident occurred seven minutes into stoppage time, with the score tied 2-2, when Owono rushed towards the centre circle to clear a long ball and his knee appeared to collide with De Miguel. The striker was left motionless on the pitch and received emergency treatment before being taken by ambulance to hospital. Owono was shown a straight red card, and the referee abandoned the match.
Although Tenerife initially described De Miguel’s condition as “serious but stable”, his health deteriorated on Tuesday morning. The club later confirmed that he had died at 08:00 local time, expressing profound sadness over the loss and extending its condolences to his family and loved ones.
Spanish media reported that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance and was resuscitated by paramedics while being transported to hospital. Tenerife subsequently said his condition had worsened neurologically.
FC Andorra also expressed its condolences to De Miguel’s family, teammates and Tenerife, while former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, who co-owns the club, paid tribute to the striker, saying he was deeply saddened by his death.
Born in Madrid, De Miguel began his professional career at Leganes in 2015 and played for several Spanish clubs before joining Castellon in 2023. He scored 16 goals as the club secured promotion to the second division in 2024. He moved to Tenerife on a three-year contract in 2025, scoring 11 goals in 29 appearances. He is survived by his young daughter, Carla.
