World Crafts Council honors Kuwait as global hub for Sadu heritage

Sheikha Bibi Duaij Jaber Al-Ali Al-Sabah said she is proud that Kuwait has been honored as a global city for the Al-Sadu craft

In a proud moment for Kuwait’s cultural legacy, the Sadu Society hosted a special ceremony to commemorate the country’s designation as a World City for Sadu Crafts by the World Crafts Council.
Held under the patronage of Minister of Information and Culture Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, the event celebrated Kuwait’s distinguished efforts to preserve and promote its rich intangible heritage, particularly the traditional Bedouin weaving art of Sadu.

The celebration, held at Sadu House, was attended by a distinguished audience, including Capital Governor Sheikh Abdullah Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah, Secretary-General of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters Dr. Mohammed Al-Jassar, ambassadors, diplomats, and heritage enthusiasts, reports Al-Rai daily.

A comprehensive evaluation of heritage sites was carried out during the visit, highlighting Kuwait’s dedication to preserving authentic traditional arts. The Sadu Society played a central role in this effort, emphasizing the artistic and cultural significance of Sadu weaving and its deep connection to Kuwait’s desert environment and historical roots.

Speaking at the event, Sheikha Bibi Duaij Jaber Al-Ali Al-Sabah, Chairperson of the Sadu Society, expressed her pride in the global recognition. “Today, we are honored to announce Kuwait City as a global city for the Al-Sadu craft.

This traditional art reflects the creativity of Bedouin women in transforming natural wool into woven masterpieces that preserve the memory of place and people,” she said. She stressed the importance of protecting and passing on Kuwait’s intangible cultural heritage, which she described as “the true roots of our identity and a bridge between the past and present.”

As part of the celebration, the I Saw Kuwait competition — organized by the His Highness Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah Informatics Award — was launched with a special focus on the Sadu craft.

The competition aims to raise awareness about this heritage through engaging the public, especially youth, by using technology and digital platforms to promote traditional culture.

The celebration will continue from May 19 to 22, with activities and exhibitions highlighting the legacy and future of the Sadu craft.
