Kuwait imports 600 MW daily from Gulf grid to meet power demand

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy imported on average of 599,151 megawatts of electricity per day from the Gulf Interconnection Network during April, according to the latest report from the ministry’s Statistics Department.

The move, according to Al-Rai daily, comes as part of urgent efforts to stabilize the grid amid rising summer temperatures and ongoing maintenance on some power generation units.

The ministry sources revealed that electricity imports from the Gulf grid began early this year due to unexpectedly high temperatures and reduced domestic production, although all generation units are expected to be operational by the end of May, except for two undergoing extended maintenance.

On April 26, peak electricity demand hit 13,150 megawatts, while the lowest recorded was 7,460 megawatts.

Meanwhile, water consumption reached a maximum of 466.9 million imperial gallons on April 30, with strategic reserves peaking at 2.59 billion gallons.

The Ministry also connected electricity to 790 new customers in April, mostly in private housing, and as summer progresses, the power load continues to climb.

However, ministry sources affirmed that recent activation of production units has stabilized the grid despite rising demand.
