WhatsApp rolls out new feature that lets users chat without sharing phone numbers

WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature that will allow users to reserve unique usernames, enabling them to connect and chat without sharing their phone numbers.
More than three billion users worldwide will be able to choose and reserve their usernames starting June 29, with the full rollout expected later this year. The feature is designed to improve privacy and give users more control over how they connect with others on the platform.
Unlike traditional social media platforms, WhatsApp says the username system will not include a public directory or search function. Users will only be able to contact others if they already know their exact username, reducing the risk of unsolicited messages or random discovery.
The company said the move addresses long-standing privacy concerns, as phone numbers are often linked to multiple parts of a user’s digital identity. With usernames, people can join group chats or interact in communities without immediately revealing personal contact details.
Users will be able to create a username through the latest version of WhatsApp by navigating to Settings > Account > Username. Early reservations are being introduced to avoid duplication, as many users are expected to compete for similar or popular names.
WhatsApp also confirmed that some creators, businesses, and organizations will be able to align their usernames with existing Instagram or Facebook handles to maintain consistent branding across Meta platforms.
Despite the update, the company stressed that usernames are strictly a privacy feature and will not change WhatsApp’s core business model or turn the app into a social media-style network with searchable profiles.
The rollout will take place gradually across different regions in the coming months, marking one of WhatsApp’s most significant privacy-focused updates in recent years.
