US-India trade agreement is close, 10-15% tariff on smaller countries: Trump

The U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States is “very close” to finalizing a trade agreement with India. He also mentioned the potential for a similar deal with the European Union, though he emphasized that it was still too early to confirm any progress on that front.

Trump was less optimistic about a trade agreement with Canada, indicating that discussions with Ottawa had not yet advanced to a definitive stage. His comments come as the U.S. faces a self-imposed deadline of August 1, after which higher tariffs on certain imports could be implemented if trade deals are not secured, according Real America’s Voice interview.

Reflecting on broader trade dynamics, Trump noted that the European Union’s approach to negotiations had notably shifted, suggesting a greater willingness to engage constructively with Washington.

He also hinted at the possibility of imposing tariffs in the range of 10% to 15% on imports from smaller countries that have, in his view, benefited disproportionately from access to the American market without offering reciprocal terms.

Trump’s comments highlight a renewed focus on trade imbalances and signal that tariff tools may continue to play a central role in shaping U.S. trade strategy if he returns to office.
