Total Solar Eclipse to dazzle millions on August 2, 2027 — rare event, breathtaking experience
Longest eclipse visible from land in over a century to darken skies across three continents -- whether you're an amateur stargazer, a seasoned astronomer, or simply curious, this rare astronomical event promises a breathtaking experience. With ideal viewing conditions in many locations and a duration unmatched in over a century, the 2027 eclipse is shaping up to be one of the most remarkable natural spectacles of our time.

A spectacular celestial event is set to unfold on August 2, 2027, as a rare total solar eclipse will sweep across parts of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, delivering over six minutes of total darkness — the longest eclipse of its kind visible from land between 1991 and 2114.
Unlike typical total solar eclipses, which rarely exceed three minutes, the 2027 eclipse will offer up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds of totality. This extended duration, caused by a rare alignment of astronomical conditions, will allow skywatchers to enjoy an uninterrupted view of the Sun’s corona, and scientists, to conduct longer observational studies, according to media reports.
Key factors contributing to the event:
- Earth at aphelion (farthest from the Sun) → Sun appears smaller.
- Moon at perigee (closest to Earth) → Moon appears larger.
- Eclipse path near the equator → slower movement of the Moon’s shadow.
The path of totality — where the Moon fully covers the Sun — will begin over the Atlantic Ocean, sweeping eastward through Southern Spain, Northern Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Central Egypt, the Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia.
The shadow will be approximately 258 kilometers wide, with Luxor in Egypt among the prime spots expected to witness over six minutes of total darkness. Libya and Egypt, with their typically clear August skies, are especially recommended for optimal viewing.
The following are the timing highlights:
- Southern Spain: Totality between 1:30 PM – 2:00 PM CEST
- Egypt & Libya: Peak between 2:00 PM – 2:30 PM EET
- India: Only minimal visibility along western fringes near sunset
