Three Kuwaitis get 10 years, 9 million dinars in fines over minors’ funds case

The Court of Appeal has overturned the acquittal of three Kuwaiti citizens in a case involving the alleged misappropriation of funds belonging to the affairs of minors and orphans, sentencing each accused to 10 years in prison and imposing a fine of 9 million dinars.

The court, presided over by Counselor Abdullah Al-Sanea and comprising Counselors Saud Al-Mutairi and Bassam Al-Ghunaim, also ordered the three men to return 4.5 million dinars and dismissed the first and second accused from their government jobs.

The case stems from allegations that the accused misappropriated funds from a company in which the Minors Affairs Department held a stake. The funds were allegedly used to purchase land in London from one of the companies owned by the accused.

The court considered the transaction an embezzlement on money entrusted to protect the interests of minors and orphans. The verdict represents a reversal of the earlier acquittal issued in the case, with the Court of Appeal imposing substantial prison terms, financial penalties and restitution.
