Tehran was among first nations to condemn Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait: Iranian envoy

The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Kuwait, H.E. Mohammad Totonji, said his country offered unwavering support for Kuwait during the 1990 Iraqi invasion, stating that Iran was among the first nations to condemn the brutal Ba’athist assault and firmly rejected the claims made by the now-defunct Iraqi regime in international forums.

In a post on the X platform, the Iranian envoy emphasized that Iran had opened its doors to hundreds of Kuwaiti families, providing them with shelter and assistance during one of the darkest periods in the region’s history. He noted that “Iranian blood mingled with Kuwaiti blood in defending Kuwait against aggressors,” highlighting the deep bonds of solidarity between the two nations, reports Al-Rai daily.

Totonji further stated that Iran swiftly mobilized its resources to help extinguish the oil well fires set ablaze by the retreating Iraqi forces, offering vital technical and logistical support in the aftermath of the occupation.

Drawing parallels between the two peoples, the ambassador said, “Just as the Iranian people wrote heroic epics in defense of their land during eight years of war, we also witnessed the courage and sacrifices of the Kuwaiti people in defending their homeland — a testament to the enduring brotherhood between our neighboring countries.”

His remarks come as Kuwait marks the anniversary of the Iraqi invasion, a time of remembrance and reflection on regional unity and resilience.
