Switzerland secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday to book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
The Swiss made a dream start, taking the lead in the 10th minute through Breel Embolo, who calmly finished a well-worked attacking move to put his side in control. Algeria found it difficult to threaten the Swiss defence during the opening half and went into the break trailing after Fares Chaibi was shown a yellow card.
Switzerland extended their advantage almost immediately after the restart, with Dan Ndoye scoring just one minute into the second half to give the Europeans a commanding 2-0 lead.
In search of a comeback, Algeria introduced several substitutes, including Anis Hadj Moussa and Riyad Mahrez, but the changes failed to unsettle Switzerland’s organised backline. Hicham Boudaoui was booked in the 72nd minute as Algeria’s frustration mounted.
Switzerland comfortably managed the closing stages, making several substitutions of their own, with Noah Okafor, Fabian Rieder, Zeki Amdouni and Silvan Widmer all coming off the bench to help preserve the clean sheet. After seven minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed a deserved 2-0 win, sending Switzerland through to the Round of 16 while ending Algeria’s World Cup campaign.
