Slovakia to reopen diplomatic missions in Kuwait, Ethiopia to strengthen global partnerships

The decision marks a strategic diplomatic shift to strengthen political and economic ties beyond Europe and into emerging global markets.

In a significant diplomatic development, the Government of Slovakia has approved the reopening of its embassy Kuwait, reaffirming its commitment to strengthen political and economic relations beyond Europe.
The decision was announced following a field meeting of the government in Púchov, where the proposal — led by Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár — was officially adopted.

The reopening comes after the closures of several Slovak and EU diplomatic missions in 2022.

“The foreign policy of the Slovak government remains committed to traditional European partnerships while expanding our presence and cooperation with countries in the Global South, the Indo-Pacific, Africa, the Middle East, and South America,” said Minister Blanár.

He emphasized that the aim is to promote Slovakia’s foreign policy interests more effectively and boost Slovak economic diplomacy worldwide.

Kuwait is a vital partner for Slovakia in the Gulf region, offering attractive business and investment opportunities. It is also the first Gulf country with which Slovakia has signed key economic agreements — notably those aimed at protecting investments and avoiding double taxation.

Kuwait, which controls approximately 6% of the world’s oil reserves, also holds major potential for bilateral trade and investment.

Recognizing the strategic importance of restoring formal diplomatic presence, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs is moving forward with reopening the Slovak Embassy in Kuwait to reestablish official channels and deepen bilateral cooperation.

The Slovak government will also reopen its embassy in Addis Ababa, with a population exceeding 100 million, Ethiopia is one of the most populous nations in Africa and serves as a dynamic economic hub in East Africa. Its growing market potential presents valuable opportunities for Slovak companies, many of which are already actively engaged in the region.

Additionally, Ethiopia holds strategic importance in Slovakia’s broader foreign policy agenda, particularly regarding its candidacy for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the term 2028–2029. Slovakia currently enjoys the support of 14 out of 55 African Union member states, whose headquarters are based in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.

This move underscores Slovakia’s intention to position itself as an active player in emerging markets and global diplomacy. By reopening embassies in both Kuwait and Ethiopia, Slovakia aims to revitalize political dialogue, strengthen economic ties, and enhance its presence in key international forums.
