Scheduled power cuts continue in Kuwait

The Ministry of Electricity and Water resorted to scheduled power cuts yesterday to protect its electricity system in light of the high increase in consumption due to rising temperatures.

Kuwait is facing challenges with its electricity grid due to high summer temperatures. The Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) implemented scheduled power cuts yesterday to protect the system from overload.

The initial cuts were limited to specific areas including Al Wafra and Al Abdali farms, and some industrial zones. These cuts lasted two hours, starting at noon.

The MEW met with government officials to discuss the situation. They determined that scheduled power cuts would likely be necessary for the next two weeks, until critical maintenance is completed at the South Al Zour station.

Once these units are back online, they will add 1,000 megawatts to the grid, increasing capacity and hopefully eliminating the need for cuts.

Despite stable temperatures around 49 degrees Celsius, electricity demand remains high. The load indicator reached 16,300 megawatts at peak usage.

The MEW is urging residents and businesses to conserve energy, especially during peak hours (11 am to 5 pm).

They recommend setting air conditioners to 24 degrees Celsius, turning off lights in unoccupied rooms, and postponing the use of high-consumption appliances like washing machines and dryers until after peak hours.

Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education announced the advancement of the summer vacation. The ministry explained that the headquarters of the second-term examination committees for the intermediate stage will be merged and identified in each educational area.

Kuwait University

Kuwait University launched an electricity conservation campaign entitled “Let’s be partners in saving electricity.” It includes 5 guidelines to raise awareness of the need for conservation among university members.

Other Ministries

The Ministries of Justice, Health, Affairs and Awqaf called for working on rationalizing electricity consumption in all facilities. This could contribute to avoiding scheduled power cuts and ensuring the continuity of work.
