US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has announced “Project Meridian,” a new Pentagon initiative aimed at examining the future of warfare and emerging military technologies.
Hegseth said SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk, Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey and former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich will participate in the project under the leadership of Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael.
The initiative is intended to bring together technology entrepreneurs, senior leaders and innovators to look decades ahead and identify potential solutions for future conflicts, Hegseth said.
He described the project as deliberately futuristic and said it would focus on technology rather than developing new military strategies or policies.
Hegseth said the group would examine the development and deployment of weapons and systems that could be required for future battlefields, extending from underground environments to beyond the Moon.
Musk, Luckey and Gingrich attended the Pentagon announcement. Hegseth said their first Project Meridian meeting would take place immediately afterward at a sensitive compartmented information facility inside the Pentagon.
