Qatar is continuing efforts to bring the US and Iran closer together and exchange proposals aimed at bridging differences between the two sides, the Qatari Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday, noting that both parties had demonstrated commitment to the negotiating track despite regional escalation.
Advisor to the Prime Minister and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Dr. Majed Al-Ansari said during the ministry’s weekly media briefing that a Qatari delegation that travelled to Tehran on Monday arrived without incident and held an extensive meeting with Iranian counterparts lasting around three hours.
The meeting involved an exchange of views on various proposals currently under consideration to bridge the gap between the two parties, after which the delegation returned to Doha on Monday evening, he added.
Al-Ansari said contacts between the parties were ongoing, with mediators continuing to exchange proposals in real time, while both sides reviewed ideas and proposals submitted by mediators through various channels.
He described the continuation of negotiations, the parties’ commitment to engaging in them and their consideration of the proposals as a “glimmer of hope” for reaching an agreement. These efforts are being conducted in full coordination with regional partners, particularly the GCC states, amid broad agreement among them on the need to prevent further escalation in the region, he said.
Al-Ansari reaffirmed that Qatari-Pakistani mediation remained a priority for Doha, stressing that any further escalation at this stage would serve no party’s interests.
