- Pakistan is preparing to phase out machine-readable passports and transition to electronic passports as part of a broader modernization drive aimed at enhancing security, convenience and digital services for travelers.
Pakistan will gradually phase out machine-readable passports and replace them with electronic passports as part of a wider overhaul of its passport and immigration system, according to official and media reports.
The decision was taken during a special meeting at the Passport and Immigration Headquarters in Islamabad and announced by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who said the move is aimed at strengthening security, improving public convenience and modernizing passport services.
No timeline has yet been set for the complete withdrawal of machine-readable passports, but authorities confirmed that the transition to e-passports will be implemented in phases.
E-passports are equipped with an embedded electronic chip that securely stores the holder’s biometric and identification data. The system allows faster processing at automated border gates and is widely used in modern international travel systems to enhance security and reduce fraud risks.
Director-General of Passports and Immigration Muhammad Ali Randhawa briefed the minister on ongoing reforms, according to local media reports, including preparations for broader digitalization of services.
Officials also confirmed that Pakistan has begun establishing a home delivery system for passports both domestically and through its overseas consular missions, enabling applicants to receive documents at their doorstep without visiting passport offices.
In addition, the government plans to introduce a cashless payment system across all passport offices from July 1, eliminating manual cash transactions and moving towards fully digital payment processing.
Authorities say the combined reforms are part of a broader effort to streamline public services, improve efficiency and align Pakistan’s travel documentation systems with international standards.
