OpenAI plans major ChatGPT overhaul to create AI ‘Super App’ ahead of IPO

OpenAI is preparing the most significant transformation of ChatGPT since its launch, with plans to turn the popular chatbot into a comprehensive AI-powered “super app” that combines coding tools, intelligent agents, and integrated digital services.

The planned overhaul is part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at accelerating revenue growth and strengthening OpenAI’s position ahead of a potential initial public offering (IPO). The company is also seeking to expand its presence in the lucrative enterprise market while competing more aggressively with AI rival Anthropic.

According to the report, OpenAI intends to give greater prominence to its coding platform, Codex, which has become one of the company’s fastest-growing products and is particularly popular among paying subscribers and business customers. Future versions of ChatGPT are expected to feature enhanced coding capabilities, AI-powered task automation, and deeper integration with third-party services.

The redesign is expected to appear first through updates to ChatGPT’s web and mobile applications. New interface features will reportedly guide users toward coding tools, image generation functions, and connected services, moving ChatGPT beyond its traditional role as a conversational assistant, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The strategy reflects OpenAI’s growing focus on enterprise customers, who currently account for a substantial share of the company’s revenue. The Financial Times reported that business clients contribute roughly 40 percent of OpenAI’s income, a figure expected to increase as the company expands its commercial offerings.

OpenAI has experienced rapid growth since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. The company recently reported more than 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million paying consumer subscribers worldwide, underscoring the platform’s global reach and commercial potential.

While reports indicate that OpenAI is preparing for a future stock market listing, the company has not officially confirmed a timetable. Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has previously stated that any IPO would be pursued when the timing is strategically appropriate for the company.

The reported changes highlight OpenAI’s ambition to evolve ChatGPT from a standalone chatbot into a central AI platform capable of handling a wide range of personal and professional tasks, as competition intensifies across the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector.
