UN health agency calls for new vaccines that better protect amid emerging variants

Repeating booster doses of the original COVID-19 vaccines is not a viable strategy against emerging variants, the World Health Organization (WHO) said as it predicts that more than half of Europe’s population will be infected with the Omicron coronavirus variant within the next six to eight weeks.

Meanwhile, five million residents in China’s central city of Anyang on Tuesday started home confinement in a new lockdown to curb the spread of the highly transmissible strain, according to state media.
