Bloomberg Agency quoted the Kuwait Oil Company as saying that its monitoring systems via the satellite had never recorded any methane leakage for 3 weeks last October since it is noteworthy to make a mention that methane is the “main component of natural gas,” and a major cause of global warming responsible for 30% of the global warming.
The agency, according to Al-Qabas daily, indicated that high-resolution images from the Sentinel 2 satellite were analyzed by Geo Analytics Kairos for the availability of 7 clouds of methane over a period of 20 days last October, which appeared to be emanating from a burning hole associated with the Burgan field.
It stated that the monitoring system of the Kuwait Oil Company sends its data every 5 minutes to the Environment Public Authority, and quoted the company as having not detected any excesses of methane emissions in previous periods.
The CEO of the Kuwait Oil Company, Ahmed Al-Aidan, told the agency that after reviewing the satellite images, we did not detect any methane emissions in that area referred to in the images, and no leaks were reported throughout last October.
He added: “If we had any leakage of methane gas emissions and it was not detected, then this is a real mystery, and we do not hide anything like that,” and stressed that the KOC is in the process of improving its monitoring systems, as part of the continuous efforts to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, explaining that the company is studying cooperation with companies that provide satellite image broadcasting services to help monitor any emissions that may occur.
