The Department of Filipino Migrant Workers said that Kuwaiti authorities have informed the department through diplomatic channels of their willingness to engage in bilateral labor talks.

The ministry added – according to Philippine newspapers today – “We are preparing in advance for these talks, and we are seeking to remove the violations and abuses against workers that have accumulated over the years, hence the need for major changes,” reports Al-Qabas daily.

The ministry stated that it had temporarily suspended the posting of first-time job applicants in Kuwait amid ongoing discussions to ensure the safety of OFWs, following the brutal murder of domestic worker Jollibee Ranara last month.

The ministry stated that “the sending of expatriate workers for the first time specifically for domestic workers in Kuwait will be postponed until after major reforms are carried out and more guarantees are put in place to protect them.”

“Instead of Kuwait, domestic workers have several countries to choose from, Hong Kong remains a strong alternative and is much closer to the Philippines, and we also have Singapore with which we have very good relations,” she added.

“We remain optimistic that significant changes can be made to the existing bilateral labor agreement between the Philippines and Kuwait,” she said.
