Severe snow storms have hit the eastern regions of the United States endangering the lives of millions of people, with very low temperatures, snow accumulation and power outage, 31 storm-related deaths were reported. A deepening crisis unfolded in western New York where many were trapped by a blizzard, while emergency services were unable to reach hard-hit areas.

Temperatures in 48 states dropped below freezing over the weekend, thousands of flights were canceled and residents were forced to stay indoors covered in snow.

The dangerous conditions prompted New York Governor Kathy Hochul to call in 200 members of the National Guard to assist in the rescue operations. “The conditions were “extremely dangerous and fatal,” Hochul told CNN, noting that even National Guard units had been stuck and had to be rescued.

A senior official ruled out that electricity will be restored as soon as possible, noting that one of the substations was buried under 18 feet of snow.
