Romanowski’s Visit Part of Wider Campaign to Mark 30th Anniversary of Kuwait’s Liberation

US Ambassador to Kuwait Alina L. Romanowski participated in a commemorative event on Tuesday to mark the Battle of the Bridges, the initial battle in Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Organized by the US military, the event included a tour of the battlefield west of Al-Jahra, where Kuwait’s 35 Armored Brigade responded to Iraqi forces as they approached Kuwait City on August 2, 1990.  “The First Gulf War was arguably one of the most significant events of the 20th century,” Ambassador Romanowski said. “To be able to visit the site where Kuwaiti soldiers fought and died resisting the Iraqi invasion was both a humbling and eye-opening experience.”

Attending the event was Colonel Khalid Al-Enezi from the Kuwait military. He thanked the U.S. military for their support and remembering this historical event. During the tour, Ambassador Romanowski was able to discuss key milestones of the battle with Major General Steven Ferrari from the US military, as well as the operational and tactical decisions taken by the Kuwaiti military at the onset of the invasion. “Today, I learned more about the sacrifices so many brave Kuwaitis made to defend their country,” the Ambassador added. “The United States is proud to have played a role in the liberation, and we remain committed to Kuwait’s security today.”

Next year, the two countries will mark 60 years of formal diplomatic relations and 30 years since the U.S. led an international coalition to liberate Kuwait. The US Embassy is coordinating with the Government of Kuwait on a campaign to mark the 30th anniversary of the liberation in February 2021.
