Virsky National Dance Ensemble of Ukraine was an enthralling sight at the Abdulhussain Abdulredha Theatre on 21 January, where their impressive performance revealed a glimpse of the culture and dance traditions of Ukraine.

The event was organized by the Embassy of Ukraine in collaboration with the National Council of Culture, Arts and Letters (NCAAL) as part of the 25th Qurain Cultural Festival, which is Kuwait’s leading arts festival. In attendance at the event was the Ambassador of Ukraine to Kuwait, H.E. Dr. Volodymyr Tolkach, and the Secretary General NCCAL Ali Al-Yoha.

In his address to the gathering, the Ukrainian Ambassador H.E. Dr. Volodymyr Tolkach noted that the cultural collaboration for the event reflected the bonds of friendship between Kuwait and Ukraine. He praised the dance ensemble as the best in Ukraine with a long history of showcasing the heritage and culture of the country, and added that they have done many outstanding performances across the world. The Ukrainian Ambassador mentioned that it is their first performance in Kuwait, and expressed his pride that the Kuwait public will learn about the culture and folk traditions of his country.

The Virsky ensemble performed many folk dances in a harmonious manner accompanied by traditional folk music, which illustrated the varied dance cultures across the regions of their native country. Adding charm to the dances was a colorful array of costumes in distinctive patterns characteristic of Ukrainian heritage. The troupe performed with style many dances from their repertoire, such as the Povzunets, a famous Ukrainian Cossack comedy dance, Oi, Pid Vishneiu (Oh, Under a Cherry Tree), Moriaky (Sailors), and ended with the ‘Hopak’ dance. The highlight of the program was Zaporozchi, the national Ukrainian dance of the Cossacks.

At the end of the program, the audience expressed their appreciation by requesting an encore, and many dancers returned to the stage to exhibit their individual dance skills to their delight.
