The UK began on Tuesday the mass vaccination program to inject its people against COVID-19, a vaccine developed by US-based Pfizer with BioNTech, a German biotechnology company.
The UK Department of Health and Social Care confirmed that the first person in the world, outside of the clinical trials, to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was Margaret Keenan, 90, at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire in central England.
During the upcoming weeks, 800,000 doses will be given, consequently about four million by the end of this month, as the total that will be received will surge to 40 million doses, it explained.
This will vaccinate 20 million people since it requires two doses, in the meantime, two other vaccines are still waiting for approval, the first produced by the UK-based AstraZeneca with the University of Oxford, and the second by the US-based company Moderna, it indicated.
Related in context, British Health Minister Matt Hancock said in a statement he felt “quite emotional actually watching those pictures,” saying that “finally we have our way through it – our light at the end of the tunnel as so many people are saying.” He then went on to underline that “whilst we vaccinate people and whilst we get the second dose in, weآ‘ve got to hold our nerve, weآ‘ve got to stick together and weآ‘ve got to follow the rules.”
