About three weeks after the opening of the Omariya nursery by the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fisheries Resources, the sales of tree and shrubs seedlings and various types of indoor and outdoor plants registered a large number, after receiving about 15 to 16 thousand visitors since its opening on the first of this October.

Head of the Agricultural Nurseries Monitoring in the Authority, Yousef Al-Moussawi, said that the nursery was opened at the the authority’s headquarters, with the start of the agricultural season, and about 75 percent of the seedlings that were distributed and sold, are from local production, saying the authority is keen to distribute seedlings to encourage citizens and those interested in planting trees either for the purposes of decoration, cosmetic agriculture and environmental improvement, as well as benefiting from the production of palm trees and other fruitful trees, reports a local Arabic daily.

The sources noted that the great demand from about 5,000 agriculture lovers resulted in the collection of about 20,000 dinars in the first week of the opening the facility to the public.

Al-Moussawi told the daily, during a tour of the nursery, that the high temperatures last September called on the management of the nursery to open it to the public earlier than in previous years, as it made great efforts to secure 100 varieties of crops in record time, and with hot weather, and without the budget that has not yet been approved.

He said that he values the role of all the workers in the nursery to restore the spirit in it despite all obstacles, to serve Kuwait and its people.

He revealed that the authority presented a project to sell seedlings electronically, where the request is made through an electronic application and payment of the required amount, which will be received after 24 hours, and it is a project awaiting approval to start early next year, and after developing the current nursery by installing electronic portals through which the nursery pioneers can buy by downloading and paying via Knet without the need to wait for payment at the gate, as the current situation is.

He stated that the workers in the nursery planted 100 types of plants that adapt to the environment of Kuwait, and prepared 750,000 seedlings of 100 varieties, and it will be increased to one million before the end of the season.

The nursery receives citizens and residents 6 months a year, 3 months during the winter season and 3 months during the summer, to provide them with hundreds of types of seedlings that are suitable for cultivation in the home, gardens, roads or on the land.

He indicated that the authority has a nursery in Abdali and another in al-Wafra, in addition to the main nursery in Omariya, and there are two nurseries belonging to the Nurseries Control Department, one for storing seedling species in the Doha area, and the other in the Ardiya area, which is for producing and breeding seedlings of wild plants at a time when the authority is studying to open more nurseries in the south of the country including in Jahra to serve the people of the governorate.

Al-Moussawi affirmed that the authority is keen to support the schools of the Ministry of Education with seedlings, as 50 seedlings are distributed to each school, and new schools are assisted with more than that, in a step towards promoting afforestation and preserving green areas.”

He pointed out that the nursery also provides guidance, advice and training courses for those wishing to enter the field of agriculture, as well as its contribution to agricultural experiments to produce new types and varieties that withstand the climatic conditions in Kuwait.

Al-Moussawi mentioned that the Al-Omariya nursery collects and stores many seeds of plants and flowers that can be produced locally, instead of buying them, such as the seeds of Ticoma, basil, mercury, ibomia, henna, willow, pember, Washington palm, Neem, Sidr, in addition to some types of seasonal flowers such as Mentor, marigold field, petunia.

He said that the nursery accompanies the project adopted by PAAAFR which is a national campaign in which the plant wealth sector in the authority, represented by the Omariya nursery, provides the campaign with the seedlings it needs.
