Whether you’re looking to help save the planet or our furry friends who share it with us, purchasing high-quality makeup and beauty products that compliment a vegan lifestyle is now de rigueur.

And while plant-based skincare and makeup have been around for years, it’s only been in the last five years that we’ve seen a boom in cruelty-free beauty and skincare around the world thanks to the internet and key influential figures continuing to spread the word.

“I feel like a lid of industry processes has been opened, leaving consumers wanting change, says UK based Clean Beauty Consultant, Saoirse Thomson. “We also can’t ignore the rise of veganism either, which is being led by these values,” She adds.

Being natural is not enough; it seems. Plant-based and cruelty-free formulators must also know their stuff and not be afraid to be put to the test. “Using Apps like ‘ThinkDirty’ are a great way to break down ingredients and find out ratings of products and their potential toxicity,” explains Thomson.

Vegan beauty is highly popular among celebrities, including Bella Hadid, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and several Victoria Secret models who often share their favorite items on their social media pages with the world. Kylie Jenner has even launched a vegan skincare line. “People care about animals, and I believe that more and more people see how animals are treated in the meat industry and it makes you want to change where you can,” says Co-Founder and CEO of vegan and cruelty-free brand NCLA, Elin Dannerstedt.

Mad Hippie – Another popular cruelty free brand recently launched in the Middle East was built on the notion that natural skincare can be every bit as effective as traditional. “Parabens, synthetic fragrance, dyes, petrochemicals, PEGs, SLS and other nasty additives aren’t necessities,” says Zaid Shakman Director of Mad Hippie, UAE. “In fact, they have no place in the products we, and those we love, put on our bodies. That’s why we put so much into each product we make,” he concludes.

It’s also important to note that ‘vegan’ is not necessarily synonymous with ‘cruelty-free.’ A brand can use vegan ingredients but still, test their products on animals during production which is why it’s best to double-check on sites like ‘ThinkDirty’, ‘Leaping Bunny’ and ‘Cruelty-Free Kitty’ to be sure.
