The suspect in the mass shooting in Monterey Park, California, who killed 10 people and wounded at least 10 others has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a van he used, police has confirmed.

The police, in a news conference late on Sunday, identified the suspect as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, adding that “several pieces of evidence” were found inside the van, in addition to a handgun but the motive of the shooting remained unknown.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden said in a statement that “while there is still much we don’t know about the motive in this senseless attack, we do know that many families are grieving tonight, or praying that their loved one will recover from their wounds.” He added “even as we continue searching for answers about this attack, we know how deeply this attack has impacted the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community.” He continued that “Monterey Park is home to one of the largest AAPI communities in America many of whom were celebrating the Lunar New Year along with loved ones and friends this weekend.” “As we await more crucial information from law enforcement, I want to assure the community of Monterey Park and the broader area that we will support you in every way we can,” he affirmed.

Furthermore, Biden ordered in a proclamation US flags to fly at half-staff at the White House and other federal buildings in the nation’s capital, throughout the US and its territories until sunset on Thursday “as a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated in Monterey Park, California.” He also directed that “the flag shall be flown at half staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.” The mass shooting took place at a ballroom dance studio after a Lunar New Year festival celebration.
