The Sudanese government and sovereign council mourned former Prime Minister Al-Sadeq Al-Mahdi who died of coronavirus in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday.

He was 84. President of the Sovereign Council Abdulfattah Al-Burhan said Al-Mahdi, whose party said died while receiving treatment from Covid-19 in the UAE, served Sudan at national and political fronts.

Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok said Al-Mahdi was an “advocate of democracy.” Al-Mahdi was admitted into hospital in the UAE three weeks ago after contracting the coronavirus.

Al-Mahdi was Prime Minister of Sudan until he was ousted by military coup by former President Omar Al-Bashir in 1989.
