Most people have encountered the dilemma of the time and bandwidth it takes to send a high-quality image online. Now, Google has launched an experimental web app named ‘Squoosh’ that it says offers a quick and easy way to send high resolution images in far shorter time than it normally takes.

The app is easy to download and simple to use. You can drag and drop the image of your choice into the app, which than offers you various compression standards, including MozJPEG, OptiPNG and WebP from Google. A small slider lets you quickly adjust the level of compression, and you will also see a running total of how large the resulting file is expected to be. A second slider can be pulled across the image to let you easily see the effects of the compression. There are more advanced options available, but even without using any of those it is possible to get a pretty good balance between image size and quality.

In a blog post announcing the launch of Squoosh, the company said its original intention was to show how quickly web apps can be made to load in its Chrome browser, even when they have to make use of codecs outside the browser. So yes, while the ap might make your webpages load faster, Google’s real aim is to show how quickly its tool launches in the first place.
