Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Sunday that his country would reopen its borders with Schengen zone countries on June 22, except for Portugal.
The Spanish prime minister announced the decision during the weekly video conference with regional presidents, reported Spanish TV.
The Spain-Portugal border will instead be opened on July first, he added.
Sanchez said the decision to reopen Spainآ’s borders came upon a request from neighboring countries, ascribing the new development to the recent drop in the number of Coronavirus infections in the country.
As COVID-19 cases and deaths in Spain remarkably dropped, the government has been slowly removing the strict measures put in place to combat the global pandemic.
Spanish health authorities on Saturday reported 130 additional COVID-19 cases, with zero death cases.
