The Spanish government expressed heartfelt condolences Wednesday on passing away of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The foreign ministry, in a statement, said the late Kuwaiti leader began a very important phase in history of his country since he assumed office in 2006 following his service as foreign minister (1963-2003) and Prime Minister (2003-06). His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad contributed to making Kuwait a “State of moderation and a major diplomatic actor committed to peaceful resolutions of conflicts,” it said.

It cited His Highness the Amir’s personal commitment to restoring relations with Iraq following the liberation of the country from Saddan Hussein’s rule, as well as his mediation to address the Gulf crisis. The foreign ministry said His Highness the Amir had numerous humanitarian achievements, prompting the UN to name him Humanitarian leader in 2014. Kuwait women gained their political rights during his reign, it said, taking them to leading political positions. Spain and Kuwait will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the relationship next year, it said.
