A World Health Organization report, published yesterday, revealed that smoking was responsible for the death of nearly 9 million people around the world last year, despite the preventive measures implemented by countries to confront the spread of smoking and the increase in the number of smokers around the world.

The WHO report also indicates that tobacco control measures have a significant impact on preventing smoking-related diseases, but tobacco is still the leading cause of death from preventable diseases in the world, reports Al-Rai daily.

The World Health Organization found that 70 percent of the population in various countries of the world is protected by at least one tobacco control measure: from banning indoor smoking, to increasing tobacco taxes to banning cigarette advertising.

While global smoking rates have decreased since the recommendations of the World Health Organization were presented fifteen years ago; last year alone, nearly nine million people died from smoking.

The organization’s report also indicated that only four countries — Brazil, Mauritius, the Netherlands and Turkey — have adopted all WHO recommendations.
