The novel coronavirus, which has infected over 71,000 people around the world and killed more than 1,800 in China, has led to a shortage of some Chinese foods in the market.

Green ginger, carrots and apples imported from China are currently in short supply in most supermarkets, as importers, wary of their goods being impounded by customs health officials have stopped importing Chinese foods.

The head of the General Union of Cooperative Societies, Mishal Al-Sayyar, said that while the union has not yet identified the shortage of any agricultural product, it is keen to import agricultural products from multiple countries to secure food commodities for citizens at reasonable prices.

For his part, Khaled Al-Hudhaiban, Vice- President of the Cooperative Societies, said that the risks of spreading the corona virus directly affected the import of some Chinese agricultural products, including ginger, and stressed on the ability of the union to fill any shortage in any agricultural product through other countries.
