The Saudi ambassador to Kuwait H E Sultan bin Saad said resuming diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran serves the stability of the region.

In a statement to Al-Qabas, the envoy of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques said that everyone witnessed the agreement to restore relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran under Chinese auspices, and the efforts exerted for the meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries which is expected to happen within two months, although the date and place are yet to be determined.

Regarding his assessment of the Chinese mediation, he said: “We hope that it will be appropriate, as the Chinese side is a source of confidence for both parties, and we hope that the Chinese mediation will proceed as hoped.”

Regarding the Gulf reactions to this agreement, he said Saudi Arabia looks at the interest of the Kingdom first, then the interests of the region as a whole, and I believe that the reactions are not only in the Gulf, and the countries of the region but also the world as a whole keeping at heart the interest and stability in the region.

About whether there will be cooperation between the Kingdom and Iran, he said: “I cannot be certain of anything now, but after the return of official relations during the meeting of the two foreign ministers, things will become clear to us, and we hope that relations will return as they were before.”

He pointed out that “the reactions to the Saudi-Iranian agreement to resume relations are positive, and the Kingdom is a source of global confidence,” stressing that “the resumption of relations serves the stability of the region.”

The Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, referred to the phone call that Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan made with his Iranian counterpart, Hussein Amir Abdollahian, during which the two sides exchanged congratulations and blessings on the occasion of the month of Ramadan.

He added: “The two sides agreed to hold a bilateral meeting between them soon, in order to pave the way for the reopening of embassies and consulates between the two countries.”
