After the end of the curfew and quarantine in areas to stem the spread of the coronavirus, in addition to the Municipality’s drive to reduce the number of cleaning workers, to adopt instead modern technology to remove waste, has given rise to uncleanliness and rodent infestation, Al Rai daily reports.

The conditions are unmanageable in Hawalli where residents complain of an excess of rodents, and stray animals. During the quarantine and curfew hours, rodents, stray cats and dogs had to search for food and wandered freely especially at night when the roads were empty.

A number of families living in blocks 9 and 10 of Hawalli after they expressed their displeasure with the failing livable conditions of their areas, stating that rats have multiplied after curfew and quarantine in the area ended. The growing menace of rats, cats and dogs which caused material damage to the area with wires belonging to cars or electronics showing signs of being gnawed by rats, while cats daringly enter homes looking for food. Their droppings and unsightly habits also raise concerns of health issues.

 One of the residents said earlier the rat population was controlled by the Municipality’s pest control department but the measures against the coronavirus pandemic allowed the rats to multiply. Moreover, given the current situation the country is facing, there isn’t much being done to handle the problems faced by the residents.
