The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research has been granted a patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office for its interconnected membrane system for water desalination, Al-Anbaa reported. The system produces high-quality drinking water with a significant reduction in brine waste compared to traditional technologies. KISR said in a press statement that the water produced by the system meets the standards set by the World Health Organization.
The institute explained that the new water desalination system can produce more than 95% more fresh water. It can also reduce consumed energy, which leads to reducing the areas required for solar panels if they are connected to solar energy to produce fresh water, whether from sea water or groundwater. This could help to reduce the economic and environmental burdens of desalination operations.
The system was developed by a team of researchers led by Dr. Mansoor Ahmed, together with colleagues namely Dr. Yousef Al-Wazzan, Dr. Rajisha Kumar, Dr. Garudashari Bhadrashari and Jibu Thomas.
