The divorce rate in Kuwait is a disturbing factor that needs in depth research to find out its causes and repercussions as official figures show on an average 20 cases of divorce happen every day – 15 among Kuwaitis and five expatriates.

According to the figures prepared by the Central Administration of Statistics, the number of divorce cases has increased in the last five years, while the statistics prepared by the Al-Rai daily for divorce cases between 2016 and 2020 shows 36,345 couples have parted ways 26,576 of them Kuwaitis.

The decrease in the number of divorce cases in 2020 was largely due to the exceptional situation in the country as a result of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the nationality of the divorced husband, the 26,576 Kuwaiti women were divorced by 22,626 Kuwaitis, 85 percent of the number of divorced women, compared to 3,950 non-Kuwaitis, 15 percent of the number of Kuwaiti women divorced.

The year wise breakdown for divorce cases is as follows:

2016: 7,223 divorce cases – 5,259 of them Kuwaiti women (4,386 Kuwaiti husbands and 873 non-Kuwaiti husbands).

2017: 7,433 divorce cases – 5,402 of them Kuwaiti women (4,510 Kuwaiti husbands and 892 non-Kuwaiti husbands).

2018: 7,869 divorce cases – 5,764 of them Kuwaiti women (4,839 Kuwaiti husbands and 925 non-Kuwaiti husbands).

2019: 7,888 divorce cases – 5,857 of them Kuwaiti women (4,938 Kuwaiti husbands and 919 non-Kuwaiti husbands).

2020: 5,932 divorce cases – 4,294 of them Kuwaiti women (3,953 Kuwaiti husbands and 341 non-Kuwaiti husbands).
