Amid bad weather in the central Philippines, a Korean Air plane carrying 173 passengers had overshot the runway while landing on the airport in Mactan Island, Cebu province on Sunday. Zero injuries had been reported according to authorities. The Airbus A330 from Incheon, South Korea, had attempted to land twice before overrunning the runway on the third attempt, Korean Air Lines Co said in a statement.
Airline officials said that the 173 people on board the Korean Air flight KE631, comprising 11 crew members and 162 passengers, used emergency slides to escape from the damaged aircraft. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines confirmed in a statement that all passengers were safe and assisted by ground personnel, while the aircraft remained lodged on the grass at the end of the lone runway at the Mactan Cebu International Airport on Monday, forcing the closure of the airport. Some parts of the plane were sheared off while others were heavily damaged, according to reports. The Korean Air officials are currently investigating the incident after issuing an apology letter.
Several flights to and from Cebu province have been cancelled, including those of flag carrier Philippine Airlines, which had initially cancelled over 50 domestic flights.
